The future of Olive, the Olive of the future

On April 28, 2015 the MKF coorganized with the French Institute in Greece and the "Conférences sans Frontières" an evening event entitled "The future of Olive, the Olive of the future".

The cultivation of mythical olive tree in Greece, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal covers 95% of the global olive oil production and by itself is an important income of these countries. Climate change and the expected atmospheric warming are expected to inforce olive industry to change its practices. The evening event was coordinated by journalist P. Vassilopoulos who coordinated a panel of scientists who specialize in climatology, agriculture, history and the Mediterranean food diet. In the coordination Sylvie Gruszow from the "Conférences sans Frontières" participated in convening the discussions. Panelists where Dr André Bervillé ex research director at L’INRA, Dr Aikaterini Polymerou-Kamilaki ex director of the Hellenic Folklore Research Center of the Academy of Athens, Stéphane Angles geographer University Paris Diderot, Prof. Christos Zerefos member of the Academy of Athens, President of MKF, Prof. Andreas Karamanos ex rector of the Agricultural University of Athens, Prof. Leandros Skaltsounis director of the section of Pharmacognosy and chemistry of Natural products University of Athens, Prof. Antonia Trichopoulou president of the Hellenic Health Foundation and Ilias Mamalakis journalist and author.

The event was on live streaming by "Telesavoirs" with oil tasting guided by the well known oil taster Yannis Karvellas who presented the various types of olive oil and its quality diversity.
