1994 - 1995

  • The Foundation, in cooperation with the Technical Museum of Thessaloniki, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, the "Institute Francaise" of Thessaloniki and the Institute "La Villette-Cite des Sciences et de l' Industrie" of Paris, organized an Exhibition concerning Environmental subjects. The exhibition was held in Thessaloniki, Greece, lasted from January 12 to February 24, 1994, and it was visited by more than 30,000 students from schools of Northern Greece. During the opening of the exhibition, where many Greek and French scientists were present, the Vice-President of the Foundation, Professor Christos Zerefos, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Foundation, donated a cross section from the historical Pausanias tree which was dated by conventional dendrochronological methods, aged 400 years old.

  • The Foundation, together with the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Balkan Environment Research and Development Institute (BERDI) co-organized the International Meeting "Eastern Europe and Global Change" under the auspices of DGXII of the European Communities. The Meeting was held in October 1994 in Halkidiki and it concerned Environmental Problems of the countries of Eastern Europe and the required actions for their solution. More than 150 Greek and foreign scientists participated to the Meeting. The proceedings of the meeting were published by the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities, Luxemburg, 1997 (eds. A. Ghazi, C. Zerefos and P. Mathy).

  • The Foundation, together with the Scout Council of Thessaloniki, the Technical Museum of Thessaloniki and the Municipality of Thessaloniki co-sponsored the Exhibition "Youth and Environment". The exhibits have been prepared by graduate students of the Post-Graduate Programme of Environmental Physics of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The Exhibition "Youth and Environment" was held in Thessaloniki on February 1-28, 1995.

  • The Foundation awarded high school students that participated in the "First Student's Competition of Environmental Programs award", organized by the American College in Athens at a ceremony held in May 5-6, 1995.

  • The Foundation, together with the Scout Council of Thessaloniki and the Municipality of Thessaloniki re-organized the Exhibition "Youth and Environment", held on November 1995 in Thessaloniki.

  • The Foundation co-sponsored the organization of the International Ozone Meeting "Ozone in the Lower Stratosphere" which was held in May 1995 in Halkidiki, Greece. More than 250 scientists participated in the Meeting. Coorganizers were the European Union, NASA, WMO, the Ministry of Environment of Greece and the International Ozone Commission. The Proceedings of that Meeting have been published as abstracts and in a special issue of Journal of Geophysical Research (102, D1, p. 1335-1590, 1997).

  • Establishment of a special account at the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, under the title: "WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award". This account, which was based on Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation own resources, aims to finance awards dedicated to the memory of late Professor Mariolopoulos under the auspices of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
