  • The 2nd South-Eastern Europe GEO Workshop was held in October 2014 at the Electra Palace Hotel. The Workshop was organized by the Greek GEO Office, the National Observatory of Athens, the Mariolopoulos-Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences and the BEYOND project. The Workshop agenda covered a broad spectrum of natural disaster phenomena such as earthquakes, extreme weather events, forest fires, toxic gasses dispersion, Sahara dust, air quality and volcano eruptions as well as the to human health. The Workshop was attended by scientists from Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, FYROM, Israel, Lebanon, Morocco, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Turkey. This Workshop strengthened the collaboration between scientists from these countries and is in progress.

  • The Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, the French Institute in Athens and the International Scientific Festival "Les Rencontres de la Terre" 2014, co-organized a series of activities entitled "Water, atmosphere, earth, fire: watching the Planet" from February to June 2014.   • The 8th GEO European Projects Workshop (GEPW-8) was organized by the European Comission, co-organised by the Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences and hosted by the Greek Geo Office - National Observatory of Athens on June 12-13, 2014. The eighth of the annual series of GEO European Projects Workshops was intended to bring all those interested in and actively contributing to the Global Earth Observations System of Systems (GEOSS) from all over Europe together, in order to present their work and discuss how Europe can contribute to this international effort, especially in the wake of the launch of the new EU Framework Programme for Research, Horizon 2020, and renewal of the mandate of GEO for another 10 years through the endorsement of the 2014 Geneva Declaration.   • On 10-11 June 2014 the Greek EU Presidency 2014 under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (ESRT) organized the International Conference "Adaptation Strategies to Global Environmental Change in the Mediterranean City and the Role of Global Earth Observations". The European Commission, Eurisy, the Mediterranean City Climate Change Consortium (MC-4), the Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences, the Research Center for Climatology and Atmospheric Physics, Academy of Athens and the Justus – Liebig University of Geissen, Germany are also co-hosting the event.   • The Award Ceremony for 2014 "WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award" was held on 10 June during the opening ceremony of the International Conference "Adaptation Strategies to Global Environmental Change in the Mediterranean City and the Role of Global Earth Observations". The prize was awarded to the following paper: "A process oriented characterization of tropical oceanic clouds for climate model evaluation, based on a statistical analysis of daytime A-train observations" by Dimitra Konsta, Helene Chepfer and Jean-Louis Dufresne, published in Climate Dynamics. The award presented by Dr Deon Terblanche, Director of Atmospheric Research and Environment of World Meteorological Organization, who represented the Secretary General of WMO. More.

  • On February 17 the presentation of the biography book presenting the life achievements of Petros Kanaginis, father of Ekaterini-Nina Mariolopoulos who founded the foundation, took place at the Benaki Museum in Athens. More.

  • The yearly Geo Plenary meeting as well as the biennial Ministerial Summit of GEO took place in Geneva from 12th to 18th January 2014. A series of side-meetings were also organized, like the High Level Working Group of the European Union for GEO, Copernicus project etc. More.

  • On February the 1st, the ceremony for the cutting of the New Year’s cake took place at the Foundation offices. Present at the ceremony were the President of the Foundation Prof. C. Zerefos, the Vice President C. Liatsos, the Secretary C. Repapis, the Tresurer G. Mariolopoulos and the members of the board of Directors, D. Asimakopoulos, A. Karamanos, N. Christopoulos and V. Tritakis. At the ceremony where also present the Director of the Foundation E. Xirotyri, the wives of the board of Directors Mrs A. Liatsos, Mrs M. Mariolopoulos, Mrs K. Asimakopoulos, Professro A. Bloutsos and Mrs A. Antoniou secretary.
