2012

  • From October 2011 to December 2012 a pilot seminar about Environmental Sensitivity and Updating took place in the town of Sparta. The seminar was organized from the Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation in collaboration with the Cultural Union of Sparta and consisted by a series of monthly presentations of qualified speakers who covered the most of the environmental subjects. The first presentetation was given by the president of the MK Foundation professor and member of the Academy of Athens Christos Zerefos and continued with professors Karamanos, Margaris, Nastis, Stournaras, Aggelopoulos, Repapis, Synolakis and Tritakis. The presentations are already collecting and processed so that a volume with all this material will be published and used as a handy manual by the audience of Sparta and all future audiences of next seminars.

  • At the request of the 95th Elementary School of Athens, the MK Foundation supported the creation of a botanical garden at the school's yard. More.

  • On the 11th December 2013 the President of MK Foundation Prof. C.S. Zerefos addressed on behalf of the Foundation the 3day Environmental Education Seminar at Stylida in Central Greece. More.

  • 29-31 October 2012. Second Annual Progress Meeting (APM) of ERA-NET CIRCLE2 in Lisbon. More.

  • On October 29, 2012 the M-K Foundation co - organized with the Academy of Athens the Colloquium "The greenhouse effect and related topics in our planetary system". More.

  • On October 29, 2012 the M-K Foundation organized the Ceremony of the "WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award 2012" which was held in the Academy of Athens during the Colloquium "The greenhouse effect and related topics in our planetary system". More.

  • The closing meeting of the OBSERVE and BALKAN-NET European projects (FP7) took place in Salonika on the 15-16 October 2012. The MKF board member Dr. Vasilis Tritakis participated as invited speaker discussing the subject "Environment - Economy and Quality of life".

  • 24-26 September 2012. Final review and report of the European Project (FP7) OBSERVE took place at the Croatian town of Split. More.

  • The Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences with the National Technical University of Athens, the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National Observatory of Athens co-organized the 26th International Laser Radar Conference (I LRC 26), which was held at Porto Heli, Peloponnesus, on June 25-29, 2012.   • For the third year the MK Foundation co-organised the Festival "Les Rencontres de la Terre" with the Ministry of Education and the Municipality of Athens. The Festival activities took place between January and June 2012. The scientific director for the events was Dr Sylvie Grutzow. More.

  • The President of the Foundation, Prof. C.S. Zerefos participated at the Europa Nostra Awards events 2012 in Lisbon, Portugal. More.

  • The Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation for the Environmental Sciences co-organized with the Hellenic Center for Marine (HCMR) the exhibition "THE PLANET IS CHANGING. Climate Change: The Threat to Life and a New Energy Future". More.

  • The MKF co-organized with the Hellenic Meteorological Society and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens the 11th International Conference on Meteorological, Climatology and Atmospheric Physics, COMECAP 2012, which was held at the University of Athens, Main Building, from 29 May to 1 June 2012.   • Under the auspices of the European Plant Science Organization - EPSO, the first international "Plant Conservation Day" was organized on 18 May 2012. More.

  • The Board of Directors of Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation awarded the Primary School of the Center for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind, with a 2.000€ award for their efforts in Environmental Education.

  • On the 2 - 4 April 2012 Professor Panayotis Nastos (University of Athens) gave a number of lectures to High School teachers and students of the city of Nafpaktos which is located in the mainland of South - Western Greece.

  • The MK Foundation co-organized with the Union of Greek Physicists the 14th Panhellenique Conference on Physics which took place at Kamena Vourla between 29 March and 1st April 2012. More.

  • An International Conference entitled, "Climate Change and Forest Fires in the Mediterranean Basin: Risk Reduction and Management" was organized on January 24-26, 2012 in the area Nir Etzion, near Haifa in Israel. The Meeting was propelled by a catastrophic forest fire in December 2011 which destroyed 50.000 acres of forest and agricultural land while 44 people lost their lives. A very active participation in the meeting organization had had the Ministry of Environmental protection of Israel, the Jewish National Fund (KKL) and the ERA-Net CIRCLE2. Since the Mariolopoulos - Kanaginis Foundation is a member of the ERA-NET CIRCLE2, was represented in this meeting by the associate professor of physical desasters Geographyin the Aegean University Dr. Kostas Kalambokidis and the expectant Dr. of the same laboratory Mr Palaiologos Palaiologou. They presented in this meeting a paper entitled "Forest Fire Modelling aided by Web GIS in a Changing Climate" where they proposed the use of new improved technologies for both prolepsis, forecasting and suppression of fire danger and occurrence.

  • On January 28th, the ceremony for the cutting of the New Years cake took place at the Foundattion offices. Present at the ceremony were the President of the Foundation Prof. C. Zerefos, the Secretary C. Repapis, the Tresures G. Mariolopoulos and the members of the board of the Directors C. Liatsos, D. Asimakopoulos, A. Karamanos, N. Christopoulos and V. Tritakis. At the ceremony where also invited the wives of the board of Directors, the director of the Foundation Mrs E. Xirotyri and the former scientific investigator of the Academy of Athens Mrs V. Zambaka, Mrs Sylvie Gruszow scientific Journalist and director of he Festival "Rencontres de la Terre" and Mrs A. Antoniou secretary.
