2006 - 2007

  • The 2006 "WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award" was awarded to the following two scientists :

  • Dr. Jeffrey Robert Knight for his paper entitled : "A Signature of Persistent Natural Thermohaline Circulation Cycles in Observed Climate" of the Hadley Centre, UK.

  • Mr. Nikolaos Christidis for his paper entitled : "Detection of changes in temperature extremes during the second half of the 20th century" of Met Office, UK.

The Ceremony took place on 17 May 2006 in Anavyssos, Athens and it was attended by representatives of the Academy of Athens, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, the General Secretariat for Research and Technology and the Hellenic Physical Society.

  • Τhe M-K Foundation together with the Committee for Global Change of the Academy of Athens organized a Colloquium entitled "Climate Change". The Colloquium was held on June 16, 2006.

  • The Foundation, jointly together with the United Nations Environment Programme, the Academy of Athens and the National Observatory of Athens hosted a scientific meeting from 23-26 September 2007 in Athens, Greece. The aim of the meeting was to discuss successful and unsuccessful lessons learned after 20 years of application of the Montreal Protocol. More than 200 academicians and distinguished scientists attended the Symposium, among which the three Nobel laureates, Professors S. Rowland, M. Molina and P. Crutzen.

The President of the Foundation Prof. C. Zerefos, the Nobel Laureates, Prof. S. Rowland, Prof. M. Molina, Prof. P. Crutzen, NCAR Director Prof. G. Brasseur, Dr. S. Solomon, among high scientists and officials from NASA, NOAA etc can be seen in the first line.
