2000 – 2005

  • The Foundation co-financed the operations and the ceremony for the 20-year anniversary of the establishment of the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which continues Professor Mariolopoulos’ work at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During the ceremony, which was held on April 19, 2000, the Foundation awarded the Gold Medal of Excellence to Professor I.S.A. Isaksen, Oslo University, Norway.
  • On November 2, 2000 the awarding of the prize “WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award” took place at the Ceremony Hall of Athens University. The prize was awarded to the studies: “New estimates of radiative forcing due to well mixed greenhouse gases” by Dr. G. Myhre of Oslo University, Norway, “Study of the structure of the lower troposphere over Athens using a backscattering LIDAR during the MEDCAPHOT-TRACE experiment: Measurements over a suburban area” by Dr. D. Balis, University of Thessaloniki. An honourable mention was given to the study: “Role of lee waves in the formation of solid polar stratospheric clouds: Case studies from February 1997”, by Dr. E.D. Riviere, CNRS, France.
  • The Foundation, in collaboration with the Committee on the Study of the Global Change (IGBP-Global Change), Academy of Athens, co-organized a Colloquium on the following topic: «Global Change in the Atmospheric Environment and its Effects in the region of Southeast Europe». The Colloquium took place on April 6, 2001 at the “Leon. Zervas” Amphitheatre of the National Research Institute in Athens. The Colloquium Proceedings were published in a special edition by the Academy of Athens and the Foundation.   • The Foundation undertook to carry out a measurement and data collection program regarding the concentrations of atmospheric pollutants in the Municipality of Chalkida. The Program was financed by the Municipality of Chalkida, the Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Chalkida (DEYAX) and the Public Enterprise of Culture and Development of Chalkida (DEPAX).
  • The Foundation and the Holy Synod’s Environmental Committee organized the “Church of Greece Exhibition for the Environment. Photos” which took place in Moni Petraki Monastery on April 6, 2001. http://www.ecclesia.gr/greek/holysynod/commitees/environment/edafos_nero_aeras.html
  • The Foundation, in collaboration with the Committee on the Study of the Global Change (IGBP-Global Change), Academy of Athens, co-organized a Colloquium on the following topic: ”Planetary Changes in the Atmospheric Environment”.   • The awardee of 2002 WMO Prof. Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award, Francois Gheusi.

    On May 30, 2002 there was the awarding of the prize “WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award” in the Ceremony Hall of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The award was presented to the studies: “Lagrangian description of airflows using Eulerian passive tracers” by Francois Gheusi of Meteo, France and “Experimental determination of the multiple-scattering effect on the lidar-signal polarization characteristics during liquid-and solidphase precipitation” by Boyan Iliev Tatarov, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The award was presented by the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Professor G.O.P. Obasi.

  • The Foundation co-organized with the Technical Chamber of Greece the Round Table Public Discussion on “The Impact of Aviation on the Environment”, which took place on February 1, 2003 within the framework of HELECO 03.
  • The Foundation, in collaboration with the Committee on the Study of the Global Change (IGBP-Global Change), Academy of Athens, co-organized a Colloquium on the following topic: “Monitoring Planetary Changes in Large Latitudes”. The Colloquium was held on March 30, 2004 at the National Research Institute.

  • The Foundation, in collaboration with the International Ozone Committee, co-organized the International Ozone Symposium in Kos, on June 1-8, 2004. The Symposium was financed by the European Union, the General Secretariat of the Olympic Games, NASA, the Onassis Foundation, the Bodossakis Foundation and other international organizations and it was placed under the auspices of the former President of the Republic, Christos Sartzetakis. https://ioc.atmos.illinois.edu/
  • During the Symposium, the Foundation awarded the prize “WMO Professor Mariolopoulos Trust Fund Award” to the studies: “The dynamically-driven longterm trend in stratospheric ozone over northern middle latitudes” to Dr. Amna Jrrar, Cambridge University and “Remote sensing detection of atmospheric pollutants by differential absorption LIDAR 510M/SODAR PA2 mobile system” to Dr. Michal Strizik of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.
  • The works of the Symposium were attended by two Nobel Prize winners, Directors of NASA and of the Max Planck Institute and other leading scientific Foundations. The proceedings of the Symposium were published in two volumes. (Proceedings of the Quadrennial Ozone Symposium QOS2004, 2004)

Ekaterini-Nina Mariolopoulos (1911-2004)

  • The donor and Chair of the Foundation, Ekaterini-Nina Mariolopoulos, wife to the late Academician Elias Mariolopoulos, passed away on August 24, 2004. The Board of Trustees passed a resolution, all its members attended her funeral and laid a funeral wreath on her death casket.
